On the Road

PRESENTED BY CROSSWINDS ENSEMBLE

A hundred-year road trip through time and place to three cities that shaped Europe’s musical landscape.

CARL ORFF arr. WANEK Carmina Burana (1938)

How did a collection of 13th century medieval poems become one of the greatest hits of 20th century classical music? Maybe it has something to do with the universal themes of desire, fate and going to the pub.

CARL REINECKE Octet (1892)

Bubbly, lyrical, vivacious and romantic. Oh, and spectacular.

ALFRED UHL Drei Tanzstücke (1985)

Imagine the Mona Lisa, painted by Picasso. You know it’s a woman, but it’s daring and modern. That’s Uhl’s music - deeply reverent to classical forms and traditions, dressed with contemporary harmonies.

PRESENTED BY MELBOURNE DIGITAL CONCERT HALL

Jasper Ly and Peter de Jager presents a recital of mesmerizing French music rich with expression, charm and sensuality. This concert celebrates two of the most important and influential French composers of the late 19th and early 20th century: Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel.

“Melbourne Digital Concert Hall (MDCH) was created by musicians, for musicians. It is designed to support the Australian arts industry during the COVID-19 crisis.

The concept is straightforward. In the coming weeks, MDCH is broadcasting a range of concerts online with the support of presenting partner 5stream. Each is performed once at a set time, just like a regular recital, and is professionally video streamed at no cost to the musicians involved.

‘Seats’ are sold online, with the full $20 ticket price going directly to the artists themselves. A modest booking fee of $4 covers transaction costs and contributes towards a piano tuner and broadcast technician.

MDCH is built on the strong reputation of a vibrant music scene, performers and supporters. The programming showcases the full spectrum of Melbourne classical artists  who have lost work due to COVID–19.

The Digital Concert Hall launched with an online music festival on March 27–29 featuring some of Melbourne’s leading musicians, with a plan to hold multiple concerts each week throughout the coming months.”
